Moonta is a seaside town on Spencer Gulf (population approximately 3,000), 160 kilometres northwest of Adelaide. Its origin lies in the discovery of copper and the
subsequent development of mining by Cornish immigrants.

The mines no longer operate, however the town is now a thriving tourist destination with safe beaches, good fishing and sporting facilities and a mild climate. Moonta Area School, along with the Kindergarten are the only educational facilities in the town, catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
