Como Secondary College encourages students to have care and respect for themselves, the community and the environment; to ask difficult questions and search for the elusive answers that will lead to understanding; and to use knowledge of their strengths to shape the future.
LOCATION
Como Secondary College is situated 10 minutes south of the Perth city centre and is close to Curtin University, shops, cafes, parks, the Swan River and cinemas. The college adjoins Collier Park Golf Complex, consistently voted Australia’s number one public golf course, and is next to the Perth Hockey Stadium, home of the state and Olympic hockey teams.
DESCRIPTION
Como Secondary College is a safe and quiet middle-sized community school located on green playing fields and surrounded by tall pine trees which provide a very pleasant learning environment.
The college has a long tradition of successfully teaching academically talented international students from countries such as Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. The international students coordinator interviews prospective students so a reasonable level of English (ESL 4/5) is expected. Local families may be located to host international students.
Como Secondary College offers numerous and diverse learning environments from comprehensive computing facilities through to spacious sports grounds. These include a new performing arts complex for the teaching of music, media and drama as well as a visual arts building. Other facilities include a state of the art photography centre and fully equipped science rooms.
International students benefit from the college’s close association with Curtin University and privileged access to nearby Technology Park which offers opportunities for interested students to work with technicians in its laboratories. Como Secondary College has a fine record of academic success and recently produced state champions in computing skills and robotics.
The academic program is extensive, catering to a variety of student needs and aspirations. The college offers over 20 university entry courses. For over 35 years Como has had a strong record of success in placing students into universities as well as TAFE colleges.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
These programs are available to international fee paying students. Interested students should contact the school for information about application procedures.
- Golf Academy (Years 8-12) has been a popular and successful program with international students. It has produced champions who have gone on to pursue their golf careers internationally. Entry into this program is through trials and interview.
- Hockey Academy (Years 8-12). Como Secondary College is the state champion hockey school. Entry to this program is through trials and interview.
- Contemporary School of Music (Years 8-12). Students who are talented in music may apply for entry to this program.
- EMITS (Years 8-10) is a program enriched in mathematics, information technology and science and successful applicants enjoy accelerated and extended learning in these areas. International applicants for this course are selected by a panel made up of Curtin University and Como Secondary College representatives.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
2008 Intensive English Program - The school has an intensive English as a Second Language class for students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Students lease a laptop for $550 so they can access the school’s wireless network for ESL classes as well as email and internet access.
A specialised teacher also offers small group support when required. Como Secondary College runs classes in English as a Second Language in Years 11 and 12.
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
A comprehensive student services team supports students and promotes their achievement through specialised programs and counselling. Como’s student support team is comprised of middle and senior school leaders, a psychologist, a careers counsellor, a nurse and a chaplain.
